First, the question most people arriving here are really asking
Metro Rod are a drainage company. If your problem is a blocked drain, a collapsed clay pipe in the garden, a manhole backing up or a soil stack that needs jetting, they do that work and we do not. Their domestic service list is drain unblocking, gutter clearance, drain repairs, drain cleaning and high-pressure water jetting, and CCTV drain surveys, and their Central London page adds no-dig relining, vertical stack cleaning, tanker services and grease management. That is a serious drainage capability, built since 1983, and there is no version of this page where we pretend otherwise.
This page is for the other case. If water is coming through a ceiling, a floor is damp with no drain anywhere near it, or your boiler keeps losing pressure, that is a pressurised water leak rather than a drainage fault, and it is worth knowing that leak detection does not appear on Metro Rod's domestic drainage page at all. Where it does appear in the group is as a capability of their sister brand Metro Plumb, whose plumbers are described as trained in areas such as gas safety works and leak detection.
Who you are actually contracting with
Metro Rod's structure is published in detail, because their parent company is listed and has to describe it. Metro Rod Limited, company number 04235803, is a wholly owned trading subsidiary of Franchise Brands plc, which is quoted on AIM. Franchise Brands bought Metro Rod in March 2017 for £28 million, when the network had 40 franchisees and around £32 million of system sales.
The 2025 annual report describes how the work is delivered in language a customer rarely sees:
"Local account customers are sourced, and jobs are priced and completed, by the incumbent franchise partner."
"The responsibility for operational fulfilment lies with the local franchise. If they cannot carry out the work, the franchise must find someone else to do the work or cancel the job."
The accounts show what that means financially: system sales of £79,444k in 2025 against statutory revenue of £18,443k, because most of the work is billed by franchise partners rather than by the plc. For national accounts, the group concluded that it is "acting as a commission agent".
This is a normal and perfectly legitimate franchise model, used by thousands of service businesses. It is worth understanding for one practical reason: the price is set locally. There is no national rate card to check, and a quote you were given in one territory tells you nothing about the next. Their terms make the same point about the quoted figure itself:
"Any Charges communicated to the Customer by Metro prior to attending the Site are an estimate only and are subject to change once Metro has inspected the Site."
Their terms specify no hourly rate, no call-out fee and no minimum charge, and no prices appear on the domestic drainage page or the Central London page. The offer there is a free, no-obligation quote.
We are the simple version of that. One company, one published rate, £150 per hour, fixed before we attend. The rate does not change for an evening or for a difficult property. The total depends on how long the job takes, which is true of everyone, and we will not pretend to know it before we have seen the work.
The guarantee difference worth knowing
Metro Rod's published warranty terms distinguish sharply between kinds of work. Installation services are warranted free from defects for 12 months and plumbing materials for 12 months, but blockage clearing work is rectified free for 28 days. Cancellation is by agreement only, with the customer liable for costs incurred to the date of cancellation.
Twenty-eight days on a blockage clearance is not unusual in drainage, because a drain that blocks again in six weeks may have blocked for a new reason. It is still the sort of thing to read before you book rather than after. Our equivalent commitment is at the other end of the job: no find, no fee. If we do not locate the leak, you are not paying for the hours we spent looking for it.
Drain or pressurised leak? How to tell before you call anyone
Most people calling either of us do not yet know which problem they have. A few signals separate them reliably.
| What you are seeing | Usually |
|---|---|
| Gurgling from a sink or toilet, slow draining, smell outside near a gully | Drainage. A drainage contractor, not us. |
| Water only appears after a sink, bath or washing machine empties | A waste pipe or drain. Drainage or a plumber. |
| Damp that is there constantly and gets worse over days, with no relationship to anyone using water | A pressurised supply or heating pipe. Detection work. |
| Boiler pressure drops and needs topping up every week or two | A heating circuit leak. Detection work. |
| Water meter creeps up overnight with everything turned off | A supply-side leak. Detection work. |
| A ceiling stain directly under a shower that dries between uses | A tray or seal failure. Often a job you can resolve yourself. |
If the middle three describe your situation, the tools that resolve it are acoustic, thermal, moisture mapping, pressure testing and non-invasive gas tracer, and the job ends with a repair to the pipe and the floor or ceiling put back.
What the reviews show
Metro Rod's Trustpilot profile stood at 4.3 from 790 reviews on 19 September 2026, with 72% five-star and 22% one-star. Trustpilot's summary of recurring positive themes is professional engineers, quick response, efficient resolution and clean, tidy work. The recurring critical themes are cost changes or billing discrepancies after the work, arrival times on emergency calls, and price transparency before work begins. The profile shows the company replying to 95% of negative reviews, typically within 48 hours, which is a strong response rate.
Given that pricing is set by the local franchise partner and that pre-attendance charges are an estimate by their own terms, the practical advice is the same one we would give about any contractor: get the figure and its basis confirmed in writing before work starts, and ask what happens to the price if the job takes longer than expected.
When Metro Rod are the better call
- A blocked drain, a backing-up manhole or a soil stack that needs jetting. We do not do drainage.
- A CCTV drain survey, drain relining or a no-dig repair.
- Commercial grease management, tanker work or scheduled drainage maintenance.
- You are outside London. They have more than forty regional service centres; we work in London only.
- You need a single national supplier across sites in several regions.
When to call us instead
- Water is appearing from somewhere nobody can identify, and it is nothing to do with a drain.
- Your boiler will not hold pressure and the heating circuit is losing water somewhere under a floor.
- A floor, wall or ceiling has to be opened to reach the pipe, and you want the same firm to repair the pipe and then make the damage good. That is our reinstatement work.
- You are making a trace and access claim and need a detection report an insurer will accept.
- You want a published hourly rate and no find, no fee rather than a quote that the terms describe as an estimate subject to change.
If you are still not sure which problem you have, describe what you are seeing and when it happens when you book an engineer, and we will tell you if it is a drainage job. Sending you to the right trade costs us nothing and saves you a wasted visit.
